But, most importantly. Remember that you can slow the game to a stop by pausing. This is also the best time to reassign targets for your squadrons, and also to order retreats for some of your units by right-clicking their items on the UI.
The second part of this tip is Power in Numbers. It might not be efficient, but it gets the job done. When you enter into battle against your opponent it is well worth taking a moment to look at the amount of squadrons that they can field.
Many enemies seem to offer surrender if you either smash them with a lot of damage very quickly or if you decimate their squadron amounts.
Check out how many they have and base your strategy on that. Most importantly though, when the enemy offers surrender its almost always in your best interest to accept it.
In Crying Suns your officers are much more than the combat buffs that they might originally seem. Combat, for example, plays out like a pausable RTS on a grid flanked by my and the enemy battleship.
Between volleys from our main weapon systems, squadrons of fighters take the field to battle one another in a constant ebb and flow that makes fights chaotic and tense.
Managing cooldown timers is key, so if I throw everything I have at the enemy ship in an all-out assault and don't finish it off, I leave myself vulnerable to attack while my weapons and fighter squadrons recharge.
It's a great foundation with some surprising nuances that I really enjoy. Fighter squadrons each occupy their own tile, for example, but will still overlap temporarily when repositioning themselves.
Those brief moments are a window of opportunity to kill two birds with one stone if I time a shot with my railgun just right. I also enjoy the way that debris gives texture to the battlefield.
Small asteroid clusters act like a temporary shield while bigger asteroids block sections of the map entirely. Sometimes neutral turrets will shoot anything that gets within range, or meteor showers will blanket the grid and destroy ships on both sides.
Like I said, it's chaotic and really fun. By the time I beat the game on normal difficulty, I had only died a few times—not the kind of challenge I want from a good roguelike.
But Crying Suns fails to realize the full potential of this combat system. Unlike FTL and other roguelikes, where death constantly looms overhead waiting to punish a wrong move, Crying Suns is too forgiving.
The Shutdown's left our planet in a civil war. My people, the Asanam, desperately need your help. Ask more about the civil war. Ask a specialist officer to find out who you should help.

The OMNIs, god-like machines which did everything for their human masters, have mysteriously shut down. And humankind, having long since lost the ability to survive on its own, is dangerously close to extinction.
You are a clone of Admiral Ellys Idaho, a weapon fashioned from flesh, the best Imperial Admiral ever to battle in the stars and you have just been awoken on this planet by its strange and darkly-humorous Guardian, Kaliban, the last functional OMNI to exist.
Your mission: skillfully command a battleship through the Empire's now chaotic, violent clusters ——where one wrong move could be your last—— as you try to reactivate the OMNIs and save the future of all humankind.Susanne Steiger Laden, ob und wie wir Sklaven retten wollen.
